The meetings of the Sub-network on Mediterranean Forage Resources within the FAO-CIHEAM Inter-Regional Cooperative Research and Development Network on Pasture and Fodder Crops represent the only specific opportunity for researchers working on Mediterranean grasslands and rangelands coming from the Mediterranean Basin and other Mediterranean regions of the world to analyse the related current advances. Sustainable Mediterranean grasslands and their multi-functions was the suggested and approved theme for the 12th Meeting of the Sub-network on Mediterranean Forage Resources, held in Elvas (Portugal) from 9 to 12 April 2008. The main function ot managed grasslands is the production of forage for ruminants but grasslands support commodity production and environmental, economic and social functions beyond the farm context. These externalities include the maintenance of biodiversity and landscape, soil, air and water quality, recreation, rural employment and social benefits. There are complex interactions and conflicts between these various functions e.g. grasslands for production of renewable energy. The potential of this land use form is therefore related to grassland performance in all its possible functions at each site. There is a growing interest in farming systems that serve multiple purposes, in the context of driving forces such as environmental concerns, climate change, etc. This places a demand on research approaches and methodologies that enable analysis of current farming systems and identification of new grassland systems integrated with landscape, environmental and recreational purposes, in a multiple land-use view. It should not be forgotten that traditional grassland-based agro-pastoral systenis have developed over millennia often using different species and ingenious combinations ot management practices representing a cultural heritage. On the above subject, this volume contain 93 contributions presented in the Meeting, providing useful up-to-date information about the multi-functional role of grassland systems, the role of perennial grasses in rainfed farming systems, the eco-physiological strategies to overcome water deficit and the selection for sustainable forage crops and pastures, on traditional or newly domesticated species, facing climatic changes

Droughts occur very frequently in many regions of the world with severe economic and social consequences also connected to the vulnerability of the water supply systems and of society in general. Such vulnerability is due to situations of permanent water scarcity, quality deterioration and increasing water demande deriving from population growth, tourist development and irrigation needs. Climate change is introducing a new dimension in drought management in many regions, as for example, the Mediterranean, since the projections of the recent relevant reports for this area predict climatic conditions with higher temperatures and more frequent droughts. Thus, a policy for drought management requires actions aimed to improve drought preparedness and to mitigate impacts. The objective of the First International Conference Drought management: scientific and technological innovations, held in Zaragoza (Spain) from 12 to 14 June, was to introduce the new scientific and technological concepts and tools to be used in drought management plans in the context of agriculture, urban supply, and water management, highlighting the successful experiences based on preparedness and risk-based management as a critical approach to mitigate the impacts associated with drought in societies with different vulnerabilities. Scientific and technological innovations in the fields of climatology, hydrology, drought and drought impact assessment, drought risk and vulnerability analysis and decision support tools for drought management were presented. The Conference was organised in the framework of the MEDROPLAN project. This project is funded by the Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme for Local Water Management (MEDA Water), coordinated by the Mediterranean Agronomie Institute of Zaragoza - CIHEAM and counts with the participation of scientiste and stakeholders from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Spain and Tunisia that have developed Drought Management Guidelines for Mediterranean countries. This volume contains 59 articles from contributions that were presented in the Conference, showing scientifical and technical advances as well as drought management experiences in Mediterranean and non Mediterranean countries. The scope of the articles ranges from global and general issues such as the predictions of drought occurrence under climate change or the methods of drought assessment, to local experiences at basin level for factoring drought into integrated water management.

GREMPA (Group of Mediterranean Research on Almond and Pistachios) is a research group created during the seventies with the support of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza. During this time, GREMPA's work has been mainly based on the study and improvement of almond and pistachio genetic resources with Mediterranean origin, although efforts have been made in all aspects of the production and marketing of these species.
The meetings of the group are held periodically every 3 or 4 years to exchange research results and to promote joint research and cooperation among scientists of the Mediterranean area working on almond and pistachio.
This publication presents the Proceedings of the XIV GREMPA meeting on Pistachios and Almonds, which took place in Athens (Greece) from 31st March to 4th April 2008, and contains 40 articles classified into the five sessions that structured the scientific programme of the Meeting:

Les terres agricoles subissent une pression croissante à la suite de l'étalement urbain et résidentiel, du développement du tourisme et de la modification des formes d'usage des espaces ruraux, et ce quel que soit le niveau de développement des pays. C'est dans la perspective d'apporter des connaissances utiles aux décideurs publics du bassin méditerranéen souhaitant mettre en oeuvre des mesures de protection des espaces agricoles, qu'un réseau méditerranéen pluridisciplinaire d'échanges et de comparaison d'expériences sur la question foncière s'est constitué à l'initiative du CIHEAM-IAMM et de l'INRA en 2007 : le réseau FONCIMED. Son premier séminaire s'est tenu à Antalya en Turquie (8-12 octobre 2008) sur le thème des modes de régulation des échanges fonciers et de l'occupation du sol. Le présent numéro d'Options méditerranéennes rassemble les contributions présentées à cette occasion. Ces recherches visent en premier lieu à connaître la nature des outils utilisés ou mobilisables par l'action publique. En second lieu, elles tendent à comprendre la relation qui s'instaure entre l'action publique et les comportements sociaux ou économiques sur lesquels elle est censée influer, afin d'identifier les liens entre le niveau d'efficience et la nature des mesures mises en oeuvre et de dégager des enseignements transférables.

Several elements often typical of the intensive farming management (e.g.limited genetic resources for plant varieties and livestock), as well as land abandonment, have resulted in a decrease of biodiversity in agro-ecosystems. The grasslands representing around one-third of the total land area are a tremendous resource of biodiversity. This publication is the outcome of the 13th Seminar of the FAO-CIHEAM Sub-Network on Mediterranean Forage Resources The contributions of Grasslands to the Conservation of Mediterranean Biodiversity held in Alicante (Spain) from 7-10 April 2010, and includes the invited and selected papers presented at the meeting. The seminar was jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), the Iberoamerican Centre of Biodiversity - Alicante University (CIBIO) and the Spanish Grassland Society (SEEP). The seminar covered a wide range of topics that were allocated into four sessions: Mediterranean farming systems and their impact on the conservation of biodiversity, Selecting forage species and crops for lower inputs, Influence of grassland management and climate change on biodiversity and Improvement of biodiversity and methods for its evaluation in Mediterranean grasslands.
