Named after the Polynesian term for a rover, or someone who roams from island to island, Omoo chronicles the tumultuous events aboard a South Sea whaling vessel and is based on Melville's personal experiences as a crew member on a ship sailing the Pacific. From recruiting among the natives for sailors to handling deserters and even mutiny, Melville gives a first-person account of life as a sailor during the nineteenth century filled with colourful characters and vivid descriptions of the far-flung locales of Polynesia.

Dès ses 13 ans il quitte le collège pour affronter le monde. Ce seront souvent des bateaux : navire marchand, frégate de guerre, trois-mâts baleinier, mais il sera aussi instituteur, commis, travailleur agricole. Le pire sera d'avoir fait ses débuts comme employé de banque et terminé comme inspecteur des douanes de la ville de New York, un travail, écrivait-il, « des moins glorieux qui soient, à vrai dire, pire qu'amener des oies à l'abreuvoir » (Redburn).
Toute l'oeuvre de Melville est irriguée par les expériences diverses et souvent malheureuses imposées par une vie semée de faillites et de dettes.
On connaît Moby Dick, mais l'oeuvre est multiforme : les souvenirs de la vie de marin (Typee, Omoo et Mardi), les romans (Redburn, La Vareuse blanche, Pierre, The Confidence Man), les nouvelles (dont Bartleby), les poèmes, journaux de voyage.
L'immense matière que lui a donnée la vie n'est devenue cette oeuvre que par la fréquentation assidue des grandes oeuvres : la Bible, Shakespeare et Milton. Si Melville mérite comme Thoreau de figurer dans cette collection, c'est bien parce qu'il est à la fois l'un des plus accessibles aux jeunes et un styliste de la plus haute tradition : « Vous autres mortels, écrivait-il dans Mardi (1849), vous traversez éternellement vos sierras en mettant vos pieds dans de vieilles empreintes. »
En 1799, le capitaine Delano, commandant d'un gros navire marchand équipé pour la chasse au phoque, rencontre au large du Chili un navire négrier espagnol sous les ordres du jeune Benito Cereno. Le navire est désemparé, les esclaves noirs se révoltent. Que va faire le capitaine Delano ? Comme dans les plus longs récits de Melville, la mer est le théâtre où vont s'affronter les consciences et les volontés.
En 1948, alors qu'il était inscrit à un cours d'illustration à Cooper Union, Alex Katz (né en 1927) créa 27 dessins à la plume et à l'encre inspirés du roman de 1851 de Herman Melville, Moby Dick. Alex Katz, qui avait lu le livre pour la première fois à 13 ans, était attiré par sa structure expérimentale. Moby Dick «n'a pas vraiment de début, de milieu et de fin», note-t-il; plutôt, "c'est une grande forme." Les illustrations fantaisistes de l'artiste restituent cette qualité tout en exprimant la formation précoce de son style désormais très reconnaissable, célèbre pour son élégante économie formelle.
